There were so many things going around during Tokyo Auto Salon (TAS) 2014, it’s no surprise if you missed out on one or two things unless you can somehow split yourself into 10 people. I enjoy the winter breeze but Tokyo was extremely windy and at 6 degrees, the cold breeze was just too much for most of us. There weren’t many outdoor events, we missed one but we managed to join the crowd at the D1GP 2014 Kick-Off and salivate at that aromatic tyre-burning frenzy.
The venue given for this is not huge at all as the Japanese like it small and cute just like their toilets. Nevertheless, the winter chill did its part and the crowd turnout was huge compared to the previous TAS. There were so many spectators, I’d say half of ’em lot only got a glimpse of smokes and the sound of high-revving of the D1GP machines. Even the smoking area was crowded and a number of smokers had to smoke outside the designated area. Needless to say, I was one of ’em. However, the Media pass did work wonders as Hazwan got a perfect spot to catch the action in all its glory.
Rest assured, there were a number of booths which were also doubled up as a garage. Team Orange was there with Kuma Kubo showing off his mettle with another famous celebrity-like Daigo Saito who made his mark in the States as well as Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Australia in the Formula D. As with any other drift event, it would not be complete without a tsuiso battle as each driver take their machines close to one another around the track. The tsuiso got the crowd all pumped up as ‘em drivers went all out even though it’s not an actual competition that day but just a kick-off event for the year.
Drifters from Goodyear as well as Team TOYO TIRES DRIFT were there as well drifting the time away under the sunny weather of the chilling winter to the cheer of the crowd. 2013 D1 Series champion Masato Kawabata, as well as fellow team members Tatsuya Sakuma and Akinori Utsumi representing team TOYO TIRES DRIFT were also part of the eight drifters in the D1GP2014 Kick-Off.
