Cruisin’ on a wet Sunday

Published on February 2nd, 2011

I was informed of a drive by a good friend of mine, Dinesh Appavu of Zerotohundred.com, that a bunch of Skylines (from Malaysian Skyline Club) ranging from R32 to R35 to A31 Cefiros, were going for a little Sunday drive through Ulu Yam heading towards Gohtong Jaya (UY-GTJ).

I said I’d go if I’ve changed my tyres, since I had a chunk missing on my rear left sidewall. After securing the resources needed for the tyre change at SPS Motorsport in Glenmarie, I woke up very early (it was still dark man!) and picked up my friends from Shah Alam before heading to Petronas Batu Caves for the meet-up.

The convoy left a few minutes before I arrived and I had to play catch-up with the gang. While going through the Ulu Yam road, we saw Remus’ R33 of Motorsport Playground parked on the side of the road with a few of the drivers, which include a very beautiful S15, if I might add. No, Remus was not taking a leak, but after looking at his car (half in the drain, half facing the road), I felt like taking a leak myself.

The front was damaged and looked to be quite bad, but Remus was standing there looking fine. After realizing we couldn’t do a thing to help, and the area was devoid of mobile signals, I drove on to look for the rest of the convoys.

Did I mention that it was raining cats and hippopotamus? I was sliding all over the place trying to catch up, but after seeing Remus’ car, I decided to kick it down a little and enjoy the drive instead. After a short drive, our mobile phones were operational again and I called ahead to ask the convoy’s whereabouts. A short conversation followed and they had no idea that Remus spun.

When I arrived at the coffee shop, all the cars are parked and the drivers were just about to walk into the place. We took our drinks, found a place, and enjoyed our hot drinks at very cold weather. Man, it felt like Japan up there.

A few R32s, R34s, a 700hp R33, 300ZX (Z31), 180sx’s, Cefiros, Neo, and an R35 made up the convoy. I heard afterwards that the RWD drivers took the road sideways almost all the way up. One Kancil had an interesting view when a certain RWD Nissan overtook the Kancil, completely sideways.

The rain made it all more interesting for these drivers, and it reminded me that I need more training in the wet. Or get an RWD vehicle. Preferably a Nissan. Dinesh, can I borrow your car?
