Continental comes out top in summer tyre test run by ‘Auto Express’

Published on October 2nd, 2009

Recently in Europe, British magazine ‘Auto Express’ declared the ContiPremiumContact 2 tyre the winner in this year’s summer tyre comparative test. “The Continental is the best all-round summer tyre you can buy” was the summary of the experts. There were twelve size 205/55 R 16 tyre models in the test, fitted to an Audi A3. The tyre size tested is one of the most commonly found on the market and is fitted to the VW Golf and Ford Focus, as well as to a wide range of other compact and medium range cars.

In the test the tyres designed by Continental’s development department in Hanover scored highly primarily in safety-relevant criteria, such as handling and braking in the wet, as well as in the braking tests and handling on dry roads. With statements like “This tyre could save your life” and “Best for braking on wet and dry roads”, the tyre testers acknowledged the exceptionally safety characteristics of the Continental tyre in the most important test disciplines.

The experts also made further comments about the particularly poor performance levels of a cheap Chinese imported tyre in terms of safety-relevant characteristics: “The Chinese tyre manufacturer is miles behind its rivals. Just hope that on a wet road with heavy traffic, the car behind you is not fitted with S-1088 China made tyres. The introduction of the proposed minimum industrial standard ruling could not have come at a better time.”

Motorists are urged to bear this in mind and check the test results published by leading trade magazines for more details of the safety characteristics of these cheap imports, which are often on sale at low prices. This is the only way tyres can be fully evaluated, because otherwise what appears to be a bargain may turn out to be an incalculable safety risk on the road – for the driver and thus automatically also for other road users.
