Compact Recreational Vehicle Runner

6 November 2009 8 Comments By Traffic Mag

When I first saw this MPV, I had no idea what model was it except that it’s a Mitsubishi until the owner told me it’s an RVR. We met the owner during the fasting month when we joined the touge session at Kuala Klawang. Later, after a bit of research, I got to know that it’s better known as SpaceWagon. Mind you that this particular MPV goes ‘sprouting’ on a regular basis and damn, it’s fast.

It was quite a surprise when I got to know that the Mitsubishi RVR, which stands for Recreational Vehicle Runner, comes standard with full-loaded VR4 engine. With that alone I’d say that the name fits the bill as VR4 engine has always been known as a powerful engine. It was a favourite engine transplant for most Proton owners until the authorities restricted the upgrade to be lesser than 25% engine increase from the original engine.

Here’s a bit of history on the RVR since it is quite a rarity to see this ride on the road. The RVR was produced by Mitsubishi back in 1991 to 2000. The top-of-the-line models comes with the drivetrain of the first Mitsubishi Galant VR4 engine; the 4G63T 2.0ltr 16V DOHC turbo straight-4 mated to either a four-speed auto or a five-speed manual tranny. Open front and rear differentials were used, with a power output rated at 170–184 kW (231–250ps; 228–247hp).

It might not be a popular choice here in Malaysia due to its awkward looks but once modified and lowered, it has all the ‘sprout’ machine stance apart from being a people-mover. Believe me not when I say that this RVR goes for touge session on weekly basis on the weekends and it’s fast, despite being a people-mover in the first place, thanks to the turbo-charged VR4 engine.
