Catch the Rise of The Sheikh at Sepang Drag Battle Tomorrow

Published on May 4th, 2012

Sepang Drag Battle 2012 enters an exciting second round at Sepang Circuit tomorrow (May 5, 2012) with all eyes on defending champion Sheikh Mohd Salimee as the Nissan driver attempts to rebound from a disastrous opening round in March.

Hugely popular with the fans and hot favourites to retain his Class A title, Salimee’s charge for victory in Round 1 was halted by an oil seal leak on his Nissan machine; forcing him to abandon his semi-final duel with Mohd Zaidi Amzah.

“Salimee would desperately want to avenge his defeat and put his title challenge back on track. I expect him wanting to come roaring back and it’s definitely something the fans would not want to miss,” says Datuk Razlan Razali, the Chief Executive Officer of Sepang International Circuit.

“Having said that, I also expect Tan Wai Loong firmly wanting to keep his winning ways and Zaidi, who lost in the final run in Round 1, targeting a win to take charge of this five-round championship. It should be very exciting stuff in Sepang tomorrow night,” Razlan added.

Organised and promoted by SIC, Sepang Drag Battle is the only drag competition sanctioned by Malaysia’s motorsports governing body, Automobile Association of Malaysia (AAM) and professionally run in a racing circuit and supported by sophisticated timing system; making the event hugely popular with the competitors and fans.

In a contest of blazing speed on a 400-metre stretch; run on Sepang Circuit main straight and against the usual racing flow from the pit exit to the starting grid, fans get a clear view of the thrilling contest, exhaust pipes spiting fire, roaring engines and instant results from the comfort of the main grand stand and from the roof-top of the paddock building.

Entrance for spectators is from the paddock entrance and tickets are priced at RM50.00 for seats at the Main Grand Stand and RM10.00 for access to the paddock and pit building where fans can get a close view of the mechanics and team crew preparing their race machines as well as rubbing shoulders with the drivers.

“Undoubtedly, an experience second to none … to be at the paddock and really, really close to the actions. You may even get a tip or two on upgrading your own cars from the experts. You can expect all the top workshops in Klang Valley and as far as Johor and Terengganu to be there,” Razlan added.

In the battle of Class B, Mohd Syukri Mohd Nor, who currently leads the championship with five points, is expected to be severely challenged again by Nur Faizun Nasri tomorrow. Ahmad Firdaus Azman, who is currently third with two championship points, could also surprise the leading duo.

The sibling rivalry in Class C for cars with maximum engine capacity of 2000cc between the Ismail Tajinder brothers should provide an additional spice for fans to enjoy. In a close battle at the opening round, Mohd Iqbal edged out Mohd Iqram; with only 0.154 seconds separating them in the final run.

Second in Class B, Nur Faizun leads Class D with five championship points; leading Mohd Sani Ali and Iqbal, who has three and two points respectively. Faizun also leads Class F for cars with V-tech engines with five points.

Hamdani Abdul Ghani leads Class E, holding a two point advantage over Azizul Arif Mohd Zaki. Azery Mohd Norzali is third after Round 1.

After Round 2, the remaining rounds will be on June 23 for Round 3; and September 8 for Round 4. Round 5 and the final round will be on October 27.
