Carreta Cafe: A Hangout & Chillout Place for Car Enthusiasts

Published on October 2nd, 2009

Hanging out and meeting up over drinks is very much a Malaysian thing, be it for socialising, work, or just to relax. The many ‘mamak’ restaurants, kopitiams, foodcourts, cafes, bistros and roadside stalls that are scattered all over Malaysian cities and towns serve as the ideal places or venues for hanging out and meeting up.

Recently Trafficmagonline came across a rather interesting and unique cafe nestled in the heart of Petaling Jaya that will definitely appeal not only to the Malaysian public in general, but specifically motoring enthusiasts, as this cafe has a very motoring and motorsports feel and appeal to it.

The name of this interesting and unique cafe is Carreta Cafe, and it first opened for business on the 8th of June this year and this is the first outlet.

A young and enterprising entreprenuer by the name of Messr Azim came up with the idea to set up Carreta Cafe, as in his own words, “I wanted a place or eatery where a car enthusiasts like myself could hangout and chill with friends or family”.

Initially, the concept of Carreta Cafe was conjured up from a dream his father had one day of opening and running a cafe that has a motoring theme and concept.

He decided that Carreta Cafe would be located in SS1, Petaling Jaya, because at night, when most Malaysians hangout, the SS1 area where Carreta Cafe is located has ample parking space available, as Azim pointed out that difficulty in getting parking can influence people to go elsewhere to hangout, eat and drink. Another reason for Carreta Cafe’s location being in SS1 is because it is convenient for Azim to manage and oversee the cafe’s daily operations as his house is located nearby.

Azim plans to test the waters, or rather market, with this Carreta Cafe outlet, and if everything goes well and according to plan, he plans to open more Carreta Cafe outlets in other areas within the Klang Valley to cater to more motoring enthusiasts in other areas.

Since the opening of Carreta Cafe, family, friends, MLOC members, other car club members, and people from the surrounding nearby areas have come to eat, drink, hangout and chill at Carreta Cafe.

Incidentally, Azim is a member of the Mitsubishi Lancer Owners Club (MLOC), as he owns a menacingly eye-catching flat-black Evo VI which he has been using for the past two and a half years or so, and more often than not this head turning flat-black Evo VI can be seen parked infront of Carreta Cafe. “I joined MLOC to make friends with fellow Mitsubishi Lancer Evo owners and also to take part in convoys and learn more about Evos from fellow MLOC members,” he said.

Azim hopes that with the ‘Muhibbah’ spirit that he and his staff promote and evoke at Carreta Cafe, more and more people, especially motoring enthusiasts, will come to chillout, hangout, and make friends at Carreta Cafe.

The menu at Carreta Cafe is quite interesting and delicious, as it is able to meet the varied tastes and cravings of Malaysians with a nice, good mix of western, local and ala carte cuisines.

One of the highlights of Carreta Cafe’s menu is the special lunch offering of delicious Nasi Padang that is available everyday.

Azim said, “Looking at the menu, I would recommend those who come to eat to try our special fried rice, spaghetti carbonara, lamb chop, or fish and chips. Where drinks are concerned, I would suggest trying any one of our cool and soothing ice-blended drinks”.

Upon closer inspection of the menu, some of the drinks were found to have rather interesting names, such as ‘Milo/Nescafe Tarik 200mph’, ‘Milo/Teh Tarik normal turbo’, and ‘Milo/Teh Tarik twin ball bearing’ (jumbo size), just to name a few.

At this point in time, Carreta Cafe has six workers and two cooks, which is more than enough to cope with and cater to the crowd of patrons and customers.

For the added benefit of patrons of Carreta Cafe, apart from having air-conditioned and open-air seating areas, Carreta Cafe also has Wifi available, and sheesha for those who want additional flavour along with their meals and drinks.

Carreta Cafe is open from 11.30am to 12.00am everyday except on major public holidays. Azim quipped, “On days when there is a healthy crowd, we usually extend our operating hours until 2.00am or 3.00am for the benefit of our patrons and customers”.

Carreta Cafe also provides catering services and is available for use for private functions or parties.

According to Azim, Carreta Cafe is supported by JC Racing Asia, APD (Automotive Performance Design) and Fuza Design. Being a motoring and motorsports themed cafe, Fuza Design bodykits, parts and accessories can be purchased from Carreta Cafe through Azim, as Carreta Cafe’s open-air seating area is adorned with samples of Fuza Design bodykits.

Carreta Cafe is located at No. 54-F, Jalan SS1/22, Kampung Tunku, Petaling Jaya, Selangor Darul Ehsan. For more information, contact Azim at 017-6773226.
