Following the theme “WE CARE” for KLIMS this year, UMW Toyota Motor is highlighting two interestingly intriguing hybrid concept vehicles for the future.

The next generation FT-HS Hybrid Sports concept car which will definitely ignite the imagination of most sports car enthusiasts and fans, and the 1/X that features a green powertrain that combines a petrol engine and a plug-in hybrid drive system that completely redefines what it means to be environment-friendly, rewrites the rules of auto design by not only being aesthetically bold and futuristic, but also ultra-efficient vehicles as well.

Through the exhibition, UMW Toyota Motor aims to showcase to the public, that people can coexist in harmony with the environment.

The company that makes the letter ‘T’ ever so prominent, is also exhibiting the world’s most popular hybrid model – the Prius, its latest Corolla Altis which is refreshlingly welcome to say the least, and the improved, more powerful, bigger displacement 3-liter Hilux 4×4 twincab pick up truck.

Apart from the obvious attraction of cars and cars of the future at Toyota’s KLIMS 2010 display, or rather pavilion, there are quite a few fun activities throughout the event days that visitors can indugle in and enjoy, including interactive displays for visitors at Toyota’s pavilion.

Toyota’s Futuristic & Revolutionary Concept Cars at KLIMS 2010

FT-HS

As a next generation of hybrid sports car, the FT-HS does not compromise in its aim of offering driving excitement and being environmentally considerate all in one.

– The FT-HS is a Hybrid sports car of the future that offers the exceptionally smooth cruising of a hybrid vehicle combined with high fuel efficiency,

reduced CO2 and other emissions, and a quiet cabin, on top of the driving excitement of rear wheel drive propulsion.

–  In addition to rolling on revolutionary, ultra-light and strong, carbon-fiber wheels, the FT-HS also uses special large-diameter, wide tires – measuring a staggering 245/35R21 upfront, and imposing 285/30R21 at the rear.

The FT-HS hybrid powertrain definitely meets sports-car fundamentals. Pairing a potent hybrid powertrain with essential sports-car fundamentals, the FT-HS is a forecasted mid-priced sports car that integrates ecology and emotion in a concept that addresses the tricky, complex and difficult question of, “What is a suitable sports car for the 21st century?”.

Boasting a powerful V6 3.5L engine, the FT-HS is coupled with Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive® to produce a targeted power output of approximately 400hp on tap. It’s projected century-sprint (0-100km/h) acceleration prowess is largely expected to be within the enviable four-second range.

One of the unique features of the FT-HS includes a carbon fiber Kevlar retractable roof that pulls into the backseat area and turns this 2+2 four seater into a 2 seat convertible with the mere touch of what is going to be a hard-to-resist button. The roof has a distinctive scooped-out section designed to reduce aerodynamic drag and provide welcome headroom at the key areas.

The FT-HS’s interior features create a dedicated driver’s cockpit that includes a cross-car instrument panel structure and a delta-wing driver pod. An integrated instrument panel surrounds the driver, creating an enclosed pod effect which is reminiscent to that of a modern fighter jet cockpit. Armrests flow seamlessly into the door and surrounding interior. Seating is optimized for a lightweight appearance and function. The seating layout can readily accommodates four people, and then converts to a two-seater when temptation proves to hard to resist and the button is pressed for the roof to retract.

Targeted at a mid-priced market position, the FT-HS would be a true “attainable exotic” piece of sporty, environment-friendly motoring with 21st-century performance.

1/X

The 1/X (pronounced “one-Xth”) is a concept vehicle that redefines from its very roots the idea of what it means to be environmentally considerate. Among its attributes, the vehicle-with a design that aims to harmoniously co-exist with people and society-weighs only “1/Xth” of other vehicles in its class.

Maintains an interior space on par with that of the Prius, with a target to be two times more fuel efficient than the Prius, and a weight reduced to 420 kilograms (about one third the weight of the 2nd generation Prius).

The plug-in hybrid powertrain with a displacement of only 500cc allows charging from an external power source and a longer electric-motor cruising distance. It has been adapted for energy diversity, emits less CO2 and contributes to the prevention of air pollution.

The power unit beneath the rear seat contributes to an innovative and highly efficient package. It adopts light but highly rigid carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) throughout the body frame to ensure superior collision safety, while allowing narrower pillars for a better field of vision.

The Most Famous Hybrid Car, The PRIUS

The third generation Prius, which was first launched in 2009, has received tremendous response from customers all over the world.

The Prius has proven that hybrid technology is viable, durable, and one of the best ways to preserve the environment while at the same time maximizing our natural resources.  As a result, hybrid technology is now a mainstream option being adopted by automakers.

The development of the new 3rd generation Prius has taken four and a half years and countless man-hours. The team was challenged to uphold the “Spirit of Innovation” and based on the concept of ‘Human Technology’. The new Prius has a point-two-five (0.25) coefficient of drag.

What lies underneath the hood of the car continues to set Prius apart from the rest of the hybrids in the market. The third generation Prius, unlike most of its competitors, utilizes the Hybrid Synergy Drive that is intelligent enough to run independently on either petrol or electric power or a combination of both.

The new Prius features a powertrain that is 90 percent newly developed with significant improvements over the previous generation. The Prius adopts a new beltless 1.8-liter, four-cylinder petrol engine with 98 horsepower. It runs at lower RPMs at highway speeds for more relaxed driving, better fuel efficiency and improved uphill performance.

The compact electric motor, with a new reduction gear unit, has a higher operating speed and output. The power output has been increased to 60 kW from 50 kW and torque has been increased to 207 Nm.  In total, the combination of the petrol engine and electric motor produces 134 ps.

One of the most important components of a hybrid car is the battery pack. The third generation Prius uses a nickel metal hydride battery to supply stored electricity to the electric motor and generator. Thanks to advancements in battery technology, the new battery pack is smaller yet more powerful. The service life of the battery depends on usage conditions but generally, owners of early Prius models have not replaced the original battery pack for many years.

The Improved & Refined, COROLLA ALTIS

The Corolla Altis has been further improved to meet customers’ expectations and it reflects Toyota’s commitment to constantly explore avenues to accommodate its customers’ valuable responses, needs and requirements.

This sporty and dynamic looking model is equipped with an exciting, all new Dual VVT- i (variable valve timing – intelligent) engine which is said to be both smooth and responsive. This engine can vary the opening times of the intake and exhaust valves, which results in improved performance, better fuel efficiency, and lower emissions. It is also equipped with the Super CVT-i transmission, with 7-speed sports sequential shift that provides seamless and responsive gear changes for a more spirited drive, as well as further improving the car’s fuel efficiency.

The Corolla Altis exterior has a more dynamic and sporty look to it thanks to design refinements and enhancements that have been carried out, which includes new headlamps, front grille, and rear tail lamps that present, a contemporary, sporty-styled executive sedan.  The interior is further enhanced to portray a seemingly more luxurious image of sorts with a leather-wrapped steering and gear knob, as well as the perforated leather seats that offers superior comfort and cushioning for the driver and the car’s occupants.

The Corolla Altis is now available in four variants, and the new four variant line-up is made up of the Altis 1.6E, Altis 1.8E, Altis 1.8G and the new variant – the commendable Altis 2.0V.

The Improved, More Powerful, HILUX 3.0G

The new Hilux Double Cab 3.0G variant exemplifies the concept of Tough and Rugged, which characterizes the current Hilux generation that has made it a market leader. As with the other Hilux variants, this new variant was developed for a dual-purpose usage but now provides extra power and performance for customers with more demanding requirements.

The vehicle is powered by a 3-litre D-4D Common-Rail Intercooler Diesel engine equipped with Variable Nozzle Turbo (VNT).  The VNT can vary airflow speed according to driving conditions to maintain optimum turbocharger boost at all times whilst improving torque and power output. Besides significantly improves the performance of the diesel engine, the Intercooler VNT also enhances drivability and fuel economy as well as lowers harmful emissions in the exhaust gases.

The Hilux is the only Double Cab pickup that has Intercooler VNT in the 3-litre segment with highest ground clearance and largest deck among other double cab pickups.
