BMW Group Malaysia welcomes the new BMW X5 at Innovation Days 2010

Published on August 10th, 2010

BMW Group Malaysia today introduced a new version of the original Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), the BMW X5 in conjunction with the launch of its BMW Innovation Days 2010 campaign. The new BMW X5 is set to once again lift the bar in its class and redefines the meaning of sports activity driving.

Available in both petrol and diesel variants, the new BMW X5 sports new engines with improved output and fuel economy, an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard and a wide range of the latest innovations in equipment features. Combined with its superior driving dynamics and presence the new BMW X5 is the epitome of four-wheel driving in a luxury package with more than 930,000 units sold worldwide since 2001.

Presenting the new BMW X5, Mr Geoffrey Briscoe, Managing Director of BMW Group Malaysia Sdn Bhd said, “The BMW X5 has been a motoring milestone since its introduction to Malaysia in 2007, and in that time we have sold 427 BMW X5’s in Malaysia making it the most successful premium SAV in the market. With the launch of the new models I am confident that the BMW X5 will continue to lead its segment as the definitive Sports Activity Vehicle”.

The new petrol powered BMW X5 xDrive35i comes equipped with an all new 3.0 litre inline six engine capable of generating 225kW/306 hp and 400 Nm of Torque. Combining BMW TwinPower Turbo, High Precision Injection and Double VANOS technology the BMW X5 xDrive35i is able to reach the 0-100km/h mark in 6.8 seconds. The introduction of BMW TwinPower Turbo and High Precision Injection ensures a considerable increase in power for the BMW X5 xDrive30i which delivers up to 27 per cent more torque and up to 12.5 per cent more output than its predecessor while retaining top levels of fuel efficiency and emission standards with a fuel consumption rate of 10.1l/100km and CO2 emission levels of 236 grams per kilometre.

Meanwhile the diesel fuelled BMW xDrive30d is equipped with a 3.0 litre inline six diesel engine generating 180kW/245hp with 540 Nm of Torque and is capable of reaching the 0-100km/h mark in 7.6 seconds. Incorporating all the latest innovations in BMW Advanced Diesel technology the BMW X5 xDrive30d generates 8 per cent more torque than its predecessor and a 22 per cent increase in output for fuel consumption of 7.4l/100km and CO2 emission levels of 195 grams per kilometre.

“With its tremendous sense of presence and power the BMW X5 sets the benchmark in luxury, flexibility and sporting dynamics. As BMW X5 customers tend to be some of the most demanding in the premium market we have been exceedingly careful to ensure that only the very best of BMW technology is incorporated into the new BMW X5 while ensuring that customers are able to enjoy as wide a range of specifications possible” said Briscoe.

The new BMW X5 is also fitted with BMW’s all new eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission as a standard feature. With optimized gear spacings and minimal slip during changes the new eight-speed transmission system allows the driver to enjoy an exceptionally smooth driving experience that provides seemingly endless infusions of power, while still providing the efficiency to match that of a double-clutch transmission system and reducing fuel consumption and emission levels even further. Combined with Dynamic Traction Control, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and Active Steering in the BMW X5 xDrive35i, the new adaptions to the BMW X5’s intelligent four-wheel xDrive allows it to remain as the best four –wheel drive system in the market and guarantees optimum driving dynamics on tarmac and off-road traction through the active distribution of torque between front and rear axles and is the fastest-responding all-wheel drive system available.

The new BMW X5 is further fitted with an all new driver assist system in the form of a rear-view camera with Top View; Through the Top View system a central computer uses data from the reverse camera, Park Distance Control sensors and cameras in each of the side view mirrors to create an overview image of the BMW X5 as well as objects in proximity to it. This serves to provide a bird’s eye view of the vehicle and its surroundings that can be viewed from the Control Display monitor, enabling the driver to maneuvre precisely even when in a confined space and is the most recent innovation in the BMW ConnectedDrive strategy of providing drivers with a wide range of convenience, safety and infotainment features.

Aside from the enhancements to the engine, the new BMW X5 is supplemented by numerous BMW EfficientDynamics innovations including Brake Energy Regeneration and demand controlled ancillary components such as with the electric coolant pump, the map-controlled oil pump, a disengageable air conditioning compressor and a transfer box optimised for efficiency. The BMW X5 also incorporates measures such as intelligent lightweight construction, tyres with reduced rolling resistance and optimised aerodynamics, to offer a ratio between vehicle performance and efficiency that is unrivalled in its segment.

Aesthetically the new BMW X5 retains much of its predecessor’s exterior presence, character and build with multiple discreet modifications to further enhance its sports like nature with a bodywork design that is characterised by harmonious proportions expressing both the powerful elegance and agility of the vehicle. A redesigned front apron and larger air inlets on the front of the new BMW X5 provides emphasis to the vehicles track width with additional under body protection further hinting at the BMW X5’s off-road capabilities while also lowering the vehicles centre of gravity. With new LED daytime running lights that provide greater visibility and safety the BMW X5 also features the classic BMW L-shape rear tail lights in a new aesthetic design featuring glowing bar elements that give the new BMW X5 a distinctive presence when driving in dark or night time conditions.

Interior-wise the new BMW X5 exudes much of the functionality, refinement and sophisticated design qualities of its predecessor. The interior ambiance of the BMW X5 is further furnished with the presence of high quality materials and tasteful colour combinations which will continue to set the BMW X5 apart from the pack as a vehicle with the refinement, poise and luxury of a premium saloon as well as the variability and functionality of a 7-seater modern SAV.

The new BMW X5 is further available in a choice of nine exterior colours including Alpine White, Space Grey, Titanium Silver, Platinum Grey and Vermillion Red and five upholstery colours, Nevada Leather Beige, Nevada Leather Oyster, Nevada Leather Cinnamon Brown, Nevada Leather Tobacco and Nevada Leather Black, to provide discerning customers with a wide variety of choices to suit their individual taste and preferences.

Innovative offerings available in the new BMW X5 include the BMW Navigation System Professional with an 8.8” screen and an 80GB Hard Disk for storing navigation and music files, Bluetooth mobile phone interface, iDrive with Control Display, a USB/audio interface plugpoint and BMW Teleservices for a comprehensive range of entertainment, infotainment and communication options.

“With its incorporation of the latest innovations in BMW EfficientDynamics, Driver Assist, and transmission systems, the new BMW X5 will continue to set an unrivaled standard in its segment and be a key contributor to BMW Group Malaysia’s success” said Briscoe.
