Published on August 12th, 2010

In celebration of the 30th Anniversary of BMW Motorrad’s GS models, BMW Group Malaysia today introduced four new, special edition motorcycles. The new motorcycles, bearing the special anniversary name “30 Years GS”, arrive in the form of the BMW R1200 GS “30 Years GS”; R1200GS Adventure “30 Years GS”; F800GS “30 Years GS” and F650GS “30 Years GS”.

Unveiling the new motorcycles, Geoffrey Briscoe, Managing Director BMW Group Malaysia said, “Throughout the last thirty years, BMW Motorrad has consistently nurtured the outstanding talents of the GS boxer models, focusing on riding dynamics, off road qualities, superior comfort and endurance, whilst at the same time consistently enhancing the overall appeal of the motorcycle to an even higher level. Thirty years on, we mark our adventures with the GS with four new special edition motorcycles!”

He also added that the eventual technologies and developments that were created for the GS models were also the platforms BMW Motorrad successfully employed for the other series of BMW motorcycles, making the GS the BMW Group’s pioneer offering in motorcycle technology.

Sharing Briscoe’s sentiments on the BMW Motorrad GS models, Fazli Shukor, BMW Motorrad Manager, BMW Group Malaysia said, “The GS created many firsts not only for BMW Motorrad but for motorcycles of the world. The GS was the first BMW enduro with a single cylinder engine, the first Grand Touring Enduro with suspension and running gears and the first Enduro to use engine and transmission as load-bearing elements on the chassis, taking away the burden from the conventional main frame. The GS was also the first motorcycle from BMW to utilize both BMW Paralever rear wheel suspension and BMW Telelever front wheel suspension, and it was the world’s first Enduro to feature ABS!”

He added that with the introduction of the “30 Years of GS” special versions of the BMW R1200GS, the R1200GS Adventure, the F800GS and the F650GS, BMW Motorrad is paying its tribute to the outstanding success of the GS models both in the production of series machines and in motorsport.

“Looking back in time in 1980, BMW Motorrad decided to embark on an entirely new territory with the introduction of the R 80 G/S. The motorcycle was created to offer a combination of on-road touring and off-road qualities without compromise in everyday use. The motorcycle won its very first race in 1981 and even shined its way to victory at the prestigious Paris – Dakar Rally. This was soon to be the first in a line of many great successes in motorsport celebrated by BMW Motorrad and the GS” said Fazli Shukor.
