Azlan tops qualifying at Malaysian Super Series

Published on August 1st, 2010

PETRONAS Yamaha rider Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman – the 2008 Supersports champion – made full use of his knowledge on Sepang Circuit race track to surprise his rivals and even himself with the best lap time in qualifying at Round 2 of the Malaysian Super Series (MSS) 600cc Supersports Championship today.

“I know this track very well and basically, I just made full use of my knowledge … I did not expect to have the fastest time. I, myself, was surprised,” said Azlan, who competed in a private bike in the opening round in May and fared badly.

“We had the backing of the team for this time round though we did not have enough time to have the bike in full colours. But, I am happy with the performance of the bike and the hot and dry weather really suit us well,” said Azlan, who had team-mate Mohd Zamri Baba clocking the second fastest time.

“I hope we will have the same good weather for tomorrow’s race. It will be difficult especially against my PETRONAS Yamaha team-mates and the Thailand riders from Honda Racing,” said Azlan, who clocked 2 minutes 14.629 seconds on his Yamaha R6 to take pole position for tomorrow’s race.

Zamri clocked 2 minutes 15.003 seconds and they would be sharing the front row for Race 1 with Walairot Rathapong and Suhatchai Cheamsap, who clocked 2 minutes 15.247 seconds and 2 minutes 16.311s respectively in their Honda CBR.

Championship leader Suhadi Ali Rahmat, who has 45 points after Round 1, clocked the fifth fastest time in a Honda CBR600 for Team Idemitsu Honda Racing around the 5.543-km track in 2 minutes 16.330 seconds.

The Superbike Championship saw defending champion and championship leader Yasuhiro Kuhara of Japan again proving as the man to beat with a fastest lap of 2 minutes 14.174 seconds in his Honda CBR1000.

The Superstock Championship looked set to be a repeat of the opening round as Ahmad Zamani Baharuddin and Ramon Azrem Abdul Karim topping the charts. In Round 1, Ramon won Race 1 before Ahmad Zamani turned the tables around to take Race 2.

Apart from the biking competitions, fans would also get the opportunity to catch actions in the Asian Touring Car Series, the Malaysian Touring Car Challenge, Macau N2000, Macau Roadsports Challenger and the PETRONAS Formula Xperience races tomorrow.
