ALEX YOONG will be aiming to take back the overall lead in the at this weekend’s Round 5-6 of the Audi R8 LMS Cup which will be held at the Ordos International Circuit in Inner Mongolia.
After losing the lead to Adderly Fong in the last round Zhuhai International Circuit in July, a double win at Ordos for the Kuala Lumpur born driver, is crucial to secure his position on top. The 16-man strong field is expected to mount a challenge to Fong of KLM Racing who has 13 points ahead of former Formula 1 ace Alex of Audi GQ.
Former FIA World Touring Car Championship driver Marchy Lee of Hong Kong is currently third on the leaderboard. “I faced some power train issues in the previous rounds but the team is looking positive for a good weekend,” said the 35-year-old after qualifying fifth at Ordos.
“I feel that we are in good shape for tomorrow despite some mechanical setbacks which the team is working on,” he added.
The circuit itself is another factor for Alex to achieve successful races. Built in 2010, the 3.751km circuit has 18 corners and was included in the 2011 FIA GT1 World Championship calendar.
“I am happy to qualify 5th.It is my first time here and the track is very technical. I hope to be able to familiarise myself with its characteristics as soon as possible,” said Alex, who took the Audi R8 LMS Cup Round 1 win in Shanghai.
Alex also ensured his physical preparation for the weekend as he has been training with the national water-skiing team.
“I’m prepared mentally and physically for this weekend but it’s going to be intense,” said Alex who will be switching from motorsports to the waterskiing championships next week.
He did the nation proud when he bagged a gold medal in the Men’s overall event at last year’s SEA Games in Indonesia after a 14-year hiatus in the sport which he last bagged the silver medal at the 1997 Games also in Jakarta.
Upon returning from Mongolia, he will be competing in the Asian Australasian Oceania (AAO) Championships along with sisters Phillipa and Aaliyah.
The Audi R8 LMS Cup is the first ever ‘One-Make’ racing championship from Audi. After its debut in Shanghai, the series will travel to Zhuhai, move on to Ordos in Inner Mongolia and return to Zhuhai before culminating into the grand finale in Shanghai to end the season.
At the end of the season, three titles will be up for grabs this season, namely the Audi R8 LMS Cup overall title, an Amateur Category and a Team award, based on points accumulated throughout the series.
Top Chinese race car driver Marchy, Alex and Hong Kong superstar Aaron Kwok are among the high profiled drivers competing in the series which is growing fast in the number of fans.
