Ahmad Firdaus proving life’s not a drag as he lives the life in the fast lane in Sepang

Published on July 19th, 2011

The third round of the Sepang Drag Battle saw some familiar faces lighting up the Sepang International Circuit, burning rubber with their breathtaking speed on the straight line.

Among them is well known regular on the drag circuit, Ahmad Firdaus Azman, 27 who has never failed to participate in all the drag battles so far since starting out 4 years ago.

Ahmad Firdaus also holds the unique record of driving in three cars this time around, a Honda Civic in the Class C Category, a Proton Satria in the Class F (Non Vtec) and Honda Civic in the Class F (Vtec). But it’ s no sweat for this mechanic in Pandan Indah who moonlights as a night racer, claiming he once drove 4 cars in one night!

“Three cars is not the most I have driven. I have driven 4 cars in one night. It’s quite tiring having to change between cars. “I started racing in the drag battle since 2007. The cars I drive are not mine, I get calls from owners who want me to race for them.

“You can say that I’m sort of a ‘professional driver’ who gets paid to drive the cars. I started racing in Batu 3 (Shah Alam) since I was in Form 5. So far I’m lucky not to be involved in any accidents around the track, but outside it’s a different story,” said Ahmad, who is managed by Zulkefli Kasiran.

Zulkefli, 36, spotted Ahmad’s talent, 7 years ago but is still lost for words to explain Ahmad’s talent, attributing it to the magical ‘aura’ that surrounds him. “I can’t explain his talent, it’s as if Ahmad has an aura around him. He has that unique ability with the car. Any car, even a slow car will become fast with him at the steering.

“He has played second fiddle to Mohd Maziz (Abdullah) for 3 years running. I’m hoping he can finally be crowned champion this year,” said Zulkefli.

In the Class C (Max engine capacity 2000cc) category, Ahmad Firdaus again had to play second fiddle to Mohd Maziz, but this time both of them had no match for the power of Aloysiles Wee in a Honda CRX who emerged victorious.

In the Class B (No limit engine capacity), Mohd Amirullah Mohd Ali was too hot to handle in a Mazda while Fareed Hamis proved too strong in the Class F (Engine 2000cc and below) Non Vtec.

Although the giants of the English Premier League dropped by for their annual pre-season, it didn’t deter the drag enthusiasts and fans from converging on the Sepang International Circuit.

51 entries were confirmed after the closing deadline at 8 p.m with 6 entries making up the Class C, 5 in Class B, 5 in Class A, 21 in Class D and 24 in Class F.
