2011 MMER: Alex hoping to be third time lucky this time around with Audi in the MMER

Published on September 15th, 2011

FORMER Malaysian Formula One driver, Alex Yoong is hoping to be third time lucky in South East Asia’s biggest endurance race as he makes his comeback behind the wheel with Belgian Audi in the Malaysia Merdeka Endurance Race (MMER) this weekend.

Alex, who remains until today the only Malaysian to have raced in F1, will be hoping for a slice of good luck as he bids to win the overall title at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) after his previous failed attempts in 2000 and 2003.

“I’m racing in Audi this year alongside Darryl O’Young and Seji Ara. I’m really hoping to win it this time around after going so close the first two times (2000 & 2003).

“We really should have won it except for the mistakes in preparation which cost us the victory.

“I have been preparing really hard for the MMER, so hopefully we will get a huge dose of luck to carry us to the finish line,” said Alex.

The MMER will be Alex’s first race after being out of the wheel for so long, but he is confident that he and his team mates will pull through this gruelling 12 hour race.

“I just came back from doing a VLN race at the famous Nurburgring Nordshliefe with an Audi R8 LMS which was a good way to get me reacquainted with the car.”

“This custom built racing car has shown that it is reliable, fast and easy to handle. The last time I drove it was in a street demo in Bukit Bintang and Orchard Road and it was a joy to drive.

“The team is a very good one (they just won the 24hours of Spa) and my team mates are excellent too, so I am feeling confident.”

Having been one of the pioneer racers in MMER, Alex is considered one of the veterans in this endurance race, but he feels that his vast experience does not give him a distinct advantage in this race.

“No, not really, experience does not count for much in this type of race. There are so many good drivers and in this sort of endurance race, having a good team, and preparation counts for more.”

“I always enjoy this race, there are so many friends that I catch up with over the weekend and I am pleased to see the international teams coming in and joining in the fun too. They add to the quality and this has seen this event grown from strength to strength.”

Besides the race, there will be many exciting events held around the circuit, with the main attraction being the 12 Hours 12 DJ 1 Race 1 Party featuring hot international DJ’s rocking the circuit on the 17th September

Keeping the crowd awake all night long during the 12 hour endurance race are Cassie D, Aurology, Zass Zuss, RAsz Tooten, Shane,  Adham Nasri, Popcorn Perky, DJ K, Ramsey and Nicky C.

Headlining this musical revolution are Shogun, Aaron Camz who promise to bring the house down with their brand of music from at the North Paddock from 2 pm to 2 am.

Pre-sale tickets are going for RM45 while door sales on event day are RM60 so concert goers are advised to purchase their tickets early to avoid disappointment.

Besides the 12 hour concert, race goers will be entertained with the many side events in store including drift, air brush demo show, sticker demo show, car club gathering, Rc drift preview, audio ice competition, spit fire show and pocket bike rides at the Mall area.

So what are you waiting for? Head down to SIC, the place to be for all night racing and entertainment. This is one event that’s worth staying up for!

For more information about the concert, please contact 03-7805 2900 or log on to www.sepangcircuit.com. For more information about other side events please call SIC hotline at 03-8778 2222.
