2010 Ducati Multistrada 1200

Italian motorcycle giants, Ducati, have combined an innovative design and unprecedented technology in unleashing its latest edition, the Multistrada 1200.First revealed at the 2009 Milan International Motorcycle Show, the Ducati Multistrada 1200 has finally arrived in Malaysia’s Ducati showrooms.

NAZA Group Joint Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dato Hj SM Faisal Tan Sri Nasimuddin said with a completely new, but purely Ducati look and style, the Multistrada 1200 delivers sport bike power and excitement, being easy to ride and with a high priority on safety and comfort.“Ducati has designed a motorcycle to tackle all kinds of journeys and road surfaces using technology derived from the Bologna made race bikes in MotoGP and World Superbike,” he said.

The bike is the epitome of a concept that combines the sport, touring, urban and enduro concepts, and merges them into the Multistrada 1200 and all these possible with just a click of the button.The design makes instant adjustment to power and torque delivery in addition to the electronic adjustments of suspension settings and traction control to transform the bike to meet the rider’s needs.The 189kg Multistrada is offered with optional ABS, while the flagship Multistrada 1200S (weighing 192 kg) comes with ABS and Ducati Electronic Suspension, by Ohlins, as standard equipment.

The 1200S is available in either a ‘Sport edition’ with specific components in carbon fibre, or the ‘Touring edition’, complete with side luggage, heated grips and centre stand.The new motorcycle will also reach a significant milestone in the company’s engineering capability by extending the periods between major service schedules on the new model to an owner-friendly 24,000km.The doubling of the mileage between valve clearance inspection has been made possible with the introduction of a new valve seat material that is combined with improved combustion efficiency and temperature management, which is designed into the Multistrada’s new Testastretta 11 degree engine.

These additions have transformed the silky smooth, 150hp world-championship winning 1198 engine into a fuel efficient, emissions low sport touring bike.The Ducati team set itself a very ambitious goal for the Multistrada 1200 project. The aim was to make the 2010 Multistrada a far more flexible bike than anything it replaces. It was to offer proper sportsbike performance, true long-range touring abilities, easy commuting and a genuine ability to get off-road and play in the dirt.

The 2010 Multistrada is an adventure bike with a combination of Italian design, cutting-edge technology and strong horsepower. And while the older Multistrada 1100DS offered plenty of displacement, it merely pumped out 90-odd horsepower, which is where the 1200 takes everything in its stride. The new bike boasts some 150hp, a de-tuned version of the 1198 motor. The bike’s dry weight is impressive, as the new bike’s 189kg weight makes it lighter than any other adventure, touring or sports-touring bike. Additionally, the Multistrada 1200 boasts an eight-stage traction control system, which cuts down the response time into milliseconds. A feature carried over from the latest sportsbikes, the twistgrip on the new Multistrada has a signal control unit which will operate the throttle body according to the mode selected to regulate the power delivery accordingly.

The premium Ohlins suspension can be adjusted full electronic for compression and rebound damping. The rider can set all these variables electronically via the digital dash. Standard on the S model is a Bosch-Brembo ABS system. It also has the most thoroughly integrated and broadly conceived multi-mode option ever offered on a motorcycle, making the new Multistrada 1200 to live up to its promise of being “four bikes in one.” There are already accessories from panniers and GPS units to the carbon fibre parts expected of a Ducati’s options list. The Multistrada is aimed at pushing the limits of the adventure bike segment in both directions with its sporting performance figures and its intelligently integrated offroad abilities, thus, making it a truly revolutionary bike.
